Pygments is a generic syntax highlighter that supports the use of over 500 languages and different text formats. It is widely used for its flexibility and it can be used as a command-line tool as well. It is used mainly for the purpose of code hosting. It can also be used in forums, wikis and different applications for the optimization of source code. Pygments support the use of several output formats. Pygments is based on PHP. It is an open-source project and welcomes contributions from its user base as per the contribution guidelines. It is actively being maintained by George Brandl, Matthäus Chajdas and Jean Abou-Samra. It provides detailed documentation.
