Splunkd tracking and usage

Splunkd is the main server process for Splunk Enterprise. It is responsible for indexing, searching, and forwarding log data, responding to network requests, and running various internal subsystems. Splunkd collects, stores, and manages machine-generated data and enables users to search, analyze and monitor it through the Splunk platform.

Except for Splunkd, the other key components include Splunk Web, Forwarders, Search heads, Deployment servers, Indexers, and Cluster masters. These components work together to provide a scalable, powerful, and flexible platform for analyzing and managing machine-generated data.

Yes, you can run multiple instances of Splunkd on a single host. However, you need to ensure that each instance uses a separate configuration and runs on a unique network port to avoid conflicts. This is useful in situations like testing different configurations or setting up Splunk instances for multiple teams on one machine.

Splunkd manages data retention and removal through a feature called data aging. You can configure different indexing settings to determine how long data is retained and when it is removed or rolled from one stage to another (hot, warm, cold, and frozen). The frozen data can be deleted or archived based on your organization's requirements.

Splunk Enterprise provides several monitoring tools like Monitoring Console, logs, and predefined searches to monitor the health and performance of Splunkd. Monitoring Console helps you track system health, resource usage, and the performance of Splunkd. The internal log files, such as _internal, _audit, and _introspection, contain detailed information useful for diagnosis and troubleshooting any issues with Splunkd.
